When she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor A respectable job Mary Jane’s mother says In a respectable houseThe house may look respectable on the outside but inside it’s a literal and figurative mess clutter on every surface Impeachment Now More Than Ever bumper stickers on the doors cereal and takeout for dinner And even troublesome were Mary Jane’s mother to know which she does not the doctor is a psychiatrist who has cleared his summer for one important job helping a famous rock star dry out Balti the 70sMary Jane is 14 and hers is a typical white American family The mother is a perfect housewife the father a lawyer Sunday is church Saturday is the club where every respectable and white neighbour is to be seen while all the workers are black Everything falls under an established order like the meals carefully programmed by Mary Jane's mother or the prayer before the meals spelled out by the otherwise distracted father Hugging kissing any open display of love is forbidden just as much as bad words and sex talk or making Mary Jane finding a summer job as a baby sitter in the neighbourhood just fits this order of things But when she enters the Cones' house she also enters the summer of her life that special summer where we keep our bodies as they are but maybe we start growing our own understanding of things The Cones have different rules kind of no rules And when Dr Cone's patient arrives the drug addict rockstar Jimmy with his gorgoeus actress wife Sheba things get even unruly and different The atmosphere is somehow magic and unforgettableThe soundtrack carefully chosen to bring back those days' flavour It is a sort of Stand by me meets Almost Famous two of my favourite movies by the way where Mary Jane's naivete' makes us smile than once and is somehow reinforced by her sidekick little Izzy the Cone kid she has to babysitThere might be a small amount of naivete' also in the novel construction and character characterization Have you ever seen a 5 year old being as lovely and easygoing as Izzy Probably only in some moviesAnd the ending is somewhow lacking some mordant But all in all I did enjoy reading it I was up till late because I actually wanted to know how it ended It was good company and that is one of the most important things in a book
